Tattoos

The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word "Tatu" which means "to mark something"

Tattooing started thousands of years ago with egyptians symbolizing everything they could possibly think of, just their hyroglyphics, different pictures were different sentences and paragraphs. Slowly, but surely, the rest of the world picked it up until it made its way out west where sailors would bring back tattood natives from the rest of the world.

Sailors are the ones to blame, for it was actually them who started placing sparrows and anchors on their bodies. Anchors symbolizing their retirement and a sparrow for everytime they sailed 5000 miles. That is why the sailor jerry is so famous in the tattoo world, he basically started flash artwork.

Hearts, anchors, sparrows, swallows, pin up girls, and even dragons can be flash artwork. Flash art is commonly used art for tattoos. For example, every time you see one of those sticker dispensers and they have temperary tattoos for a dollar, the artwork they use is flash art. It is just drawings that tattoo artists have done and can do, nothing custom about it, it is in a book, people say I want that and the artist will do it (I personally HATE flash art because it takes away from my creative genious if you will and there is only so many times a guy can tattoo the same heart with the same tribal design behind it before he goes crazy) I very much prefer custom designs.

Custom designs, opposed to flash art, are becoming more and more common in tattooing. Nowadays, 'Miami Ink' is strictly custom artwork. They do have flash art sheets but only use them as reference for designing things like positioning, certain designs, and sometimes colors.

I work in a tattoo studio as apposed to a tattoo shop, the difference between the two is that a studio will do custom artwork, and are renowned for their artwork. A shop will have flash sheets all over the walls numbered one to like 500 and they will say "I can do number 223 for 90 bucks"... that's not my style! I would much rather sit down and get to know the person and to make their own tattoo, personal for them and then discontinue it after its done so its unique and suites their own individuality.

Colors, nowadays, are much more advanced from what they were say even ten years ago. Tattoo artists used to put lead in the color to keep the color passionate, but we both know how stupid that is, so changes were made. Tattoo ink is now composed of pigments that are suspended in a carrier solution that makes the colors stay more bright and vibrant for a longer period of time due to the way a tattoo works.

The reason a tattoo works, is because of many different things all happening at once. If you have ever see a fresh tattoo you will notice that the skin isn't cut. You would think that all those needles going in and out of your skin would actually cut you, but it is actually on a molecular level just bending the skin cells and trapping ink in between them.

Your skin is made up of three layers: your epidermus, dermus, and i think its called a sub-dermus although I'm not to sure. Each layer being made of up segments, the necessary depth to make a tattoo work is past the epidermus, into the dermus and into the papilary or reticulary layer of the skin, so about a millimeter deep not to much more. The way your skin cells are layered are like when you build a brick wall right, the needle does not break the skin. Like I said, the needle just bends the cells to let the needle into the right layer. Vasceline is a wonderous tool for this being as it gives the needles slip. It also helps not dyeing your skin and making a mess of the stencil when your doing the tattoo. So when the needle goes in it is loaded with color molecules which are obviously much smaller than your skin cells which get bent downwards. When the needle comes out all of your skin cells are bending back upwards and litterally grabbing the ink off the needle and trapping it in between the cells making the tattoo permanent. The reason why a tattoo bleeds is because your skin cells are still opened.

I mentioned depth, depth (besides sterilization) is the most important part of tattooing! If you don't go deep enough the ink will just fall off! The human body literally changes everything in it 4 times a year so if you dont go deep enough the tattoo will just fall off. If you go to deep.. past the dermus and into the sub dermus which is made up of fatty lipids, the tattoo is "blow out" and makes the line work, coloring, everything, just look like absolute shit and the skin will be permanently raised in the area of the tattoo... The reason it will "blow out" is becasue the fatty lipids will litterally take the ink and disperse it away from the area, being as its foriegn to your body your body thinks the ink is bad so it will drain and you wont have any color in your tattoo anymore or you will have blown out line and the whole thing will just be a mess.

I still have to go into styles, sterilization, the machines and how they are built, different needles, lots more. There aren't any really good tattoo sites that can tell you much about tattooing but more just flash artwork for sale and stuff which is why I think this would be a great idea.
